AUSTIN - Most all-star games can be labeled as offensive showcases. Not a whole lot of defense, with a premium on offense, which gives the fans something to get out of their seats and cheer about.
That wasn't the case in the 11th annual Austin Area All-Star Softball Game on Wednesday night at Westlake High School, as the North team beat the South 5-1.
Katelin Wolf, of La Grange, was named the North MVP as she silenced the South bats to the tune of seven strikeouts in five innings, with no earned runs on three hits.
"It was really exciting to be with different girls and my defense came out to help me, said Wolf, who plans on playing next season at East Tennessee State University.
"That really made me confident on the mound knowing that the defense would do their job and I didn't have much to worry about behind me."
The North snapped a 1-1 tie in the third, putting up two runs and never relinquished the lead. They added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh.
"The talent is unbelievable is when you have a collection of players like this," said North coach David Sisson, who coaches at Pflugerville. "I enjoyed the game and it's good to see so many great athletes come together here."
Danielle Durham, from Westwood, was happy to end her high school career with a happy note after a sour loss in District to Vista Ridge.
"It felt good to make this team because our last high school game we didn't do too well," Durham said. "This makes me happy to end it like this."
South coach Keith Tuck, who coaches at Dripping Springs and who has been around since the All Star game began at Westlake in 2000, continues to be amazed by 56 elite softball players on the field that have helped the talent in the sport grow.
"It's amazing to me how far softball has come since I started coach it back in the mid-'90s," Tuck said. "It's nice to have this event to recognize these young ladies."
Amanda Ruiz, from Hays, was named MVP for the South. She made two sparkling defensive plays in the center and right field, along with picking up a hit and pitching a scoreless inning.
