| Pinales 2nd at state XC meet Tiger junior edges Cedar Park standout Stinson for silver
By BUTCH HART Special To The Leader
Stony Point junior Mark Pinales made the turn for the finish line and picked up the pace about 1,000 yards out. Minutes later the Tiger junior was earning the silver medal at the UIL state cross country championships at Old Settlers Park. Pinales toured the course in 15:08.05 about 23 second behind winner Craig Lutz of Lewisville Marcus on a warm, windy afternoon Saturday.
"We went out pretty fast and at the one-mile mark the pack picked up the pace and ran away from 'em but by the second mile I had caught most of them and knew I had to go when I got to the 1,000-yard mark I could see the guys in front of me and was able to run all but one of them down," Pinales said. Pinales edged Cedar Park standout Parker Stinson by three seconds.
Overall, The Woodlands won their fourth straight boys Class 5A cross country team championship and record 16th state boys cross country title to highlight the meet.
The Woodlands was the only boys team to repeat as titlist while girls teams from Humble Kingwood Park (4A), Decatur (3A) and Spearman (2A) each repeated as champions. Kingwood Park won the 3A title two years ago and won Class 4A last year.
Other team champions were: Humble Kingwood (5A girls), Boerne Champion (4A boys), Argyle (3A boys), East Bernard (2A boys), Gruver (1A girls) and Plains (1A boys).
Sarah Andres of The Woodlands was the only repeat champion in the 10 classes which competed. Andrews ran the two-mile course in 10:45.09.
