Aztex blow past Tornados for second win

Saturday 1,013 fans cheered on the Austin Aztex (2-0-1) as they faced the DFW Tornados (0-2) at Dragon Stadium. The weather was cool and perfect for a night on the pitch and the Aztex did not squander the evening - clinching their second win of the season, 3-0.

Newcomer Andres Cuero, a Westlake graduate, knocked in the first Atztex goal in the 34th minute. Willy Guadarrama and Edgar Alvarez added two more in the second half to solidify the win.

The DFW Tornadoes played the Laredo Heat the night before, and Austin showed no mercy on the fatigued team, pouring on the offense early. Tornado keeper Brian Sarber had his work cut out for him all night.

In the 2nd minute Westley Allen smacked a header on goal that hit the upper bar of the goal and fell out. Led by the aggressive play of Marcel Uriarte and Cuero the Aztex stayed on the offensive press most of the night. Cuero, an All-Rookie selection at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, was forced to watch the game from the sidelines last week as a new acquisition but made up for it quickly with his solid debut.

Ezual Lewis and Cuero commanded the ball for most of the first half with their quick feet and sweeping dribbles. Jamie Watson and Uriarte had nice shots on goal but Sarber was there to protect his goal. Aztex goalie Miguel Gallardo also had a few nice saves, though his defense kept him protected most of the night.

In the 34th minute Watson got a pass into Jorge Vega, who shot the assist over to Cuero, who blasted the ball into the net for the goal. The score remained 1-0 at half time but all the momentum in the game belonged to Austin.

In the 61st minute Zack Pope earned his second yellow card and was shown the red card. This put the Aztex down a man for the rest of the game and was a window of opportunity for the Tornadoes. That window was slammed in the 74th minute when Guadarrama nailed a goal on a fast breakaway.

The Aztex defense held tough and gave the Tornadoes no change at the rally. Just as the 90th minute dawned Alvarez tacked on another goal with an assist from Robin Martinez.

Next the Aztex play the Laredo Heat in an away game Friday.

They return to Dragon Stadium for a Sunday game against the New Orleans Shell Shockers.
