Rain, floods prompt home evacuations
 
Sean Bedner from Round Rock’s Parks and Recreation Department was up to his knees in the swollen Brushy Creek Wednesday morning, as heavy rains and flooding closed the Lee Street park, just east of Interstate 35. Bedner tied off an old Navy torpedo, which is part of the park’s Submarine Veterans Memorial, so it would not be carried away.
Round Rock Police and Fire departments on Wednesday evacuated approximately 16 homes along the Brushy Creek floodplain, an area extending eastward from Hairy Man Road near Sam Bass to Red Bud Lane (parallel to Palm Valley Boulevard).

Hutto closer to budget approval
Hutto City Council members approved the first reading of its $25.5 million fiscal year 2011 budget Sept. 2. The City Council will approve the second and final reading of the budget during a special meeting Thursday, Sept. 16.

Hidden treasures revealed
A Round Rock man refused to reveal his name after learning the antique platinum-and-sapphire ring that his father, a jeweler, had made for his mother so many years ago may now be worth up to $15,000. The man feared that readers would track him down to steal the treasure.

Hutto ISD taps into reserves for budget
On Aug. 26 the Hutto ISD Board of Trustees unanimously approved a $39.9 million budget and tax rate of $1.54 per $100 assessed valuation for the 2010-11 school year.

Photo exhibit traces TBCH history
A photography exhibit which opened in downtown Round Rock's ArtSpace last week merges the past and the future of the Texas Baptist Children's Home, which is part of Children at Heart Ministries. During September, the Texas Baptist Children's Home will celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The Round Rock City Council passed resolutions at its Aug. 26 meeting to nominate the Education Management Corporation and two Dell projects for Texas Enterprise Project designation, and approved a tax abatement agreement with Toppan Photomasks to create new jobs and bring in new equipment at its Round Rock facility.

The average Williamson Count homeowner will pay about $17 less in taxes this coming year, after county commissioners on Tuesday adopted a new budget and tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year, which starts Oct. 1.

Local takes part in latest approach toward scoliosis
A Round Rock student became a part of a medical revolution in spine and scoliosis surgery this spring.

Patricia Bielecka, a 2009 graduate of Stony Point High School who is currently a sophomore at the University of Houston, participated in a minimally invasive scoliosis procedure that Dr. Matthew Geck with the newly created Seton Spine and Scoliosis Center performed May 27.
