Hutto foundation set to reveal new programs

LAURI ZACHRY
Education Reporter

The Hutto Education Foundation will have a ribbon-cutting to announce its new programs Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Hutto ISD Administration Building, 200 College St. in Hutto.

The education foundation is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization created to develop resources for enhancing and maximizing the quality of education available to Hutto's children, said education foundation President Cindy Gonzalez. In order to accomplish this mission, the foundation will seek to foster relationships not only within the Hutto community but throughout the local area.

Two weeks ago, the organization kicked off its Founder's Drive with a goal to raise $50,000 for the organization. So far, the education foundation has received $6,000 in donations.

Since its inception in 2006, volunteers have recruited about 25 members, representing such groups as the Greater Austin and Hutto Chamber of Commerces, the HISD Board of Trustees, the Hutto Economic Development Corporation, Hutto City Council and the Round Rock Express as well as parent volunteers.

Acting as an independent resource associated with HISD, the HEF hopes to aid in the development and continuation of academic programs falling outside the scope of the HISD budget, Gonzalez said.

Through previous foundation donations last year, HISD received funding for its C-scope math and science curriculum and graphing calculators for high school students and received money for teacher and student classroom grants.

"School budgets are tight and districts need the help of education foundations," Gonzalez said. "Education is not only important to students, but to businesses as they want students to be ready for the workforce one day."

For those interested in being a part of the Founder's Club but who don't have the minimum $1,000 to invest, the education foundation allows people to pay out donations in installments, Gonzalez said. The Hutto Education Foundation will put the names of the Top 100 investors in the Founders Club on a plaque to hang in the HISD Administration Building.

For more information, interested individuals or businesses may visit the Foundation's Web site at huttoeducationfoundation.org.
