Watson was recognized as the Community Relations Volunteer of the Year, for organizing middle school tours of county facilities.
Birkman was named Mentor of the Year. She mentors third-grade twin girls at Berkman Elementary, 400 W. Anderson Ave.
A former elementary school teacher, Birkman is in her third year as an RRISD mentor.
"You really get more out of it than you give," she said. "I encourage everyone to consider becoming a mentor."
Birkman noted the time commitment is only 30 minutes per week, minimum, and Berkman Elementary has been flexible in working with her schedule.
"Claude Berkman, who the school is named after, would be very proud of you," County Judge Dan Gattis - himself a former teacher - said to Birkman during the May 20 Commissioners Court meeting.
Gattis was referring to the late educator, who served from 1947-73 as principal for Round Rock's Central Elementary. The school was renamed for Berkman two years after his retirement and he continued to visit the campus until just before his death in 2001.
According to an RRISD news release volunteers - such as Watson, Birkman and hundreds of others - logged a total of 202,024 hours for the district during the 2007-08 school year.
