| CONCERT REVIEW: Grabbing a hearty slice of Cake California indie rockers perform at Southwestern University Fans of Cake's trumpet-infused indie funk rock flocked to Georgetown's Southwestern University last Thursday, some coming from as far as San Antonio.
The show opened with an energetic performance by the Murdocks, which helped to prime the audience with excitement. As Cake walked onto the stage, they were welcomed with a roar of enthusiasm by an audience ready to hear a good show.
Cake offered their fans a mix of their biggest hits as well as many lesser-known gems from their vast catalog.
Frontman John McCrea made the show all the more interesting by inviting the audience to participate. In addition to inviting the fans to clap or sing along, he often paused between songs to interact with the audience with environmental trivia, humor and a peach tree giveaway (a current tradition where the winners must plant the tree and upload photos of it to the band's Web site every five years).
At one point he even jokingly teased Texas by asking why our big state is so worried about people messing with it and stating that we're just paranoid and need to relax.
Cake closed the show with an encore performance of their hit song "The Distance" which had the crowd singing and dancing. As everyone leaving the show was welcomed by thunder and lightning of Thursday night's thunderstorm, it had nothing on the thundering applause of a satisfied crowd of Cake fans.
